Boston Mayors Cup Cross Country Festival

Presented by Boston Parks, USA Track & Field, Boston Cross Country
Franklin Park, Boston MA - Sun 10/22/95

Both the men's and women's course records were broken at the Boston Mayor's Cup Cross Country Festival on Sunday at Franklin Park.

Three time World Champion Lynn Jennings of Newmarket NH shattered the 16:59 time set by Jen Rhines in September with a clocking of 16:20. She was followed by World Indoor 3000 meter bronze medalist Joan Nesbitt of North Carolina in what could be a preview of the USA Championships set for Franklin Park on December 3. Nesbitt and Carmen Trancoso were both left in Jennings' wake.

In the men's race, Seamus McElligott, a former NCAA Division III all American while at Haverford, turned back a stellar field to win the 8k in 23:09, 42 seconds faster than Harvard's Ian Carswell ran for the old standard. McElligott left three former USA National team members in his wake, including 8 time USA champion Pat Porter. He led at 2 miles, with Brad Barquist taking over before 3 miles. But the final trip into the Wilderness found McElligott emerge with a lead he would not relinquish. Defending champ Abidi Bouazza finished third as Jon Hume and Gary Giffen running strong races behind him.

Over 400 runners competed in five separate races.
