3M Half Marathon Just Keeps Getting Faster

Austin, Texas - February 7, 1999 - Mexico's Andres Espinosa, the 1993 New York Marathon winner, set a new record for 3M's Half Marathon this morning with a time of 1:01:17, beating Jerry Lawson's record of 1:01:43 set last year. Ideal running conditions contributed to his win, said Espinosa, which marked a new personal half marathon record for the runner. Newcomer to the 3M event Simon Sawe, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kenya, took second in the Male Elite field at 1:04:03; and Lazarus Nyakeraka, a Kenyan living in Dallas, took third at 1:04:21.

In the Male Elite Masters Division, Keith Dowland, of Austin, took first at 1:10:53; Steve Pierce, of Boulder, Colo., was second at 1:15:01; and Kim Wrinkle, of Houston, was third at 1:15:46.

Taking first place for the Female Elites was past 3M event winner Jody Hawkins, of Blooming Grove, Texas, at 1:14:11. Nadia Prasad, former Olympian, of Longmont, Colo., and France, took second at 1:14:59; and Marie Boyd, last year's female elite winner, of Albuquerque, N.M., took third at 1:15:35.

In the Female Elite Masters Division, Tatiana Pozdnyakova, of High Springs, Fla., and Ukraine, took first place and broke her standing record for the event with 1:13:04. Patti Valadka, of Houston, took second at 1:18:28; and Irina Bondarchuk, of Russia, who won the category last year, took third this year at 1:19:36.

In the Wheelchair Division, Keith Davis, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., took first place at 47:50. Jan Mattern, of Arlington, Texas, who won last year, took second this year at 51:59; and 17- year-old Jeremy Fisher, of New Braunfels, was third at 58:46.

Approximately 2,500 runners and walkers, including individuals and relay teams, registered for the four 3M races, which included the Half Marathon, the Half Marathon Relay (2 legs, approximately 10K apiece), the 5K Fun Walk/Run and the 3M Kids' Fun Run. The temperature today was in the 50s at race time with high humidity. The 3M Half Marathon and Relay is run on a point-to-point southbound course that's mostly downhill.

The total cash purse was $11,000. 3M guaranteed a $15,000 donation in conjunction with the half marathon to LifeWorks, an alliance of youth and family services.

3M has sponsored the event since 1995. The 3M Half Marathon is part of the RunTex 101 Mile Distance Challenge.
