Run for Peace 10K/5K

Elizabethtown, PA, June 26, 1999

Results/story courtesy of the Run for Peace.

After a three year hiatus, the "Run for Peace" which had for thirteen years (1983-95) been a fixture of the Lititz, PA landscape, has been revived by the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren and the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the  Brethren.  With the addition of a 5K race to the previous l0K and Peace Mile, the "Run for Peace" has a new format which this year drew over 350 runners to its new venue on and around the Elizabethtown College campus.  While the majority of our runners were from Lancaster and Lebanon Counties, we had participants from as far away as Italy, New York City, New Orleans, and Chicago.

Unusual trophies highlighted the awards ceremony: all of the men's and women's winners received hand-carved impala figurines imported from Kenya---these unique handcrafts bring dignity and needed income to developing third-world artisans.  Crystal mugs etched with the new Run for Peace logo were given as second place awards.  Crystal light-catcher/pendants, also etched with the new logo, were presented to the third place finishers.

Since l983, over 30,000 "Miles for Peace" have been logged by participants in the Run for Peace, and over $18,000 has been earned for a variety of peacemaking causes. This  year's profits of more than $3,000 will go to support two worthwhile causes. The primary beneficiary is the Maria Luisa Ortiz Women's Center in Mulukuku, Nicaraugua.   Ravaged by poverty, hurricanes, and war, the Mulukuku center is a model of economic and social progress in the Third World.  Sue  Wagner-Fields, a local volunteer who has supported and led a church sponsored workcamp delegation to this center, was on hand at the race to present the awards.  Additional race proceeds will be sent to a second beneficiary: the Mennonite Central Committee's "Yugoslav War Victims Fund"; its resources are specifically designated for refugee relief in war-torn Kosovo.

In former years, monies raised from this race have gone to support projects such as: the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima, Japan; Heifer Project International; Habitat for Humanity; Agricultural Exchange Programs in Poland; a Balkans Peace Team; Student Exchange Programs in Poland; Christian Peacemaker Teams in the Middle East; the Brethren World Peace Academy in New Windsor, MD; Refugee Relief in El Salvador; Brethren Volunteer Service; On Earth Peace; a  Well-Drilling Project in the Sudan; etc.

The "Run for Peace" was founded by members of the Lititz Church of the Brethren in 1983, as an event which would focus on and promote international peace and justice. Guided by the words of Jesus, "Blessed are the peacemakers . . . ," its goal was to honor and support individuals and organizations that promote peacemaking throughout the world.  To this end, we continue to commit our individual and combined efforts.  Come an join us next year for the Y2K "Run for Peace."
