OVERVIEW . . . Fools Run 5K, 10 Miler, 1 Mile Fools Run -- Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA.  This had to be the best weather in quite a few years at Kutztown.  Swirling wind, but the temperature was in the upper 50's at race start, with sun.  Since this is the week-end of the big Cherry Blossom in DC, it kind of pulled from the date change of this year's Fools Run.  Both courses are "challenging" with finishes onto the beautiful college track.  With a total of 487 entrants, there were 190 finishers in the 5K, and 222 in the 10 Miler.  The 1 Mile "Fools" Run had about 15 runners.  You had to see the outfits to believe them (Giant Crabs, Dragons, Running Boxes . . . you get the idea.)  Carlos Martins, 29 years old, Kearney, NJ came dressed to run and took first place cash of $150, with Brian Harris, 25, Kutztown, PA second in 14:41 ($75), and Bud Coates, 42, Emmaus, PA giving up the third place cash of $50 to collect and claim first master overall for the $100 cash award -- No Fool here.  Amilcar Duarte, 40, Newark who finished right behind Bud Coates, elected to claim second overall master for the $50 award, with fifth place finisher overall, Kareem Lanier, 26, Oxford, PA moving up to claim the third overall cash award of $50.  Got all that?  Third master overall was Bryan Stahley, 40, Trexlertown, PA in 16:07.  Now, on to the 5K women with Laura Mason-Byrne, 36 years old, from E. Stroudsburg, PA taking first overall in a fine 16:22.  Susan Thomas, 31, Phillipsburg, NJ took second in 17:54, and Jane Hahn, 34, Quakertown, PA third in 18.49.   First female master overall Rose Mercer, 43, Sinking Spring, PA took, first in 21:53, with Vivian Ramierz, 41, Macongie, PA and Gail Less, 44, Birdsboro, PA taking second and third in 22:42 and 24:50, respectively.

Finishing  clearly by himself  on a challenging 10 mile course, was John Martin, 29 years old, Millersville, PA in 55:38 ($200), and taking second and third respectively were Robert Patten, 29, Bethlehem, PA in 56:09 ($100), and Seth Kuchar, 28, Bethlehem, PA in 56:46 ($50).  Sweeping the same overall cash awards for females were Sandy Reedy, 33 years old, Reading, PA in 1:04:07, Stacy Gaynor, 33, State College, PA and third was Joan Hunter, 33, Phila., PA.  Male and Females masters overall saw cash awards of $150, $75, $50.  Congratulations to Joe Muldowney, 45 years old, Pottsville, PA in a fine 57:31, David Horvath, 45 Palmerton, PA 59:14, and Bill Plough, 44, Hamburg, PA in 1:0l:55.   Christine Ondrovic, 40, Emmaus, PA took first female master, with Kathy Koaberlein, 48, Albrightsville, PA second in 1:18:23 and Lisa Leayman, 40, Mohnton, PA third in 1:18:27 --  a kick to the finish between second and third.  Congratulations to all the finishers for running a most excellent Fool Run 1999!  A special thank you to the Kutztown Chamber Commerce and their total commitment to this excellent event, and especially to the college students who volunteer each year at the finish line.  Well Done.  Next year's date is April 1, 2000 - sounds like a good date for the Fool's Run to us.
