BROWNING ROSS CLASSIC 5K
1 MILE RACE - 1 MILE FUN RUN-WALK - KIDS SPRINTS

MARCH 28, 1999 -  Woodbury H.S., Woodbury, NJ

502 ENTRANTS
303 5K Fishers -- 1 Mile Finishers 86 -- 40 Kids Sprints

The weather was ominous, big wind and rain storm during the night.  No sun on race day temperatures in the mid-40's.  Wind kicking around, but no rain and above freezing, and wind could have been much worse so thank you weather gods.  A large thank you to Woodbury H.S. for hosting the event.  Kids sprints went extremely well, and high spirited -- everyone was a winner and received a medal.  The mile event turned out to be quite serious.  The team from Villanova decided not to "run in formation in the 5K", jumped in the mile and got a good work out (see results).  Way to go!   The 5K started right on time with over 300 runners toeing the line.  A great course, and very good support by the police and all the volunteers on course from Gloucester Catholic H.S.

I do apologize for the course being short.  The joke was that Brownie usually made he courses short to make the runners feel better, but that is not my style.  Seems the tacking devise on my bike was not working correctly.  No I did not take the course lightly, I never do.  THE COURSE WILL BE USATF Certified next year.  The only reason we did not have it certified this year, was we wanted to be sure it would be one that worked, which it did, prior to spending money on a course certification.   So next year, the start will be pushed back further down on Broad Street to make up the distance.  We have adjusted the the finishing pace to reflect a course of 2.8 miles, it has now been re-measured twice since race time.  The course certification number will be posted on next year's race application.

Next year, we will allow more room for all the participants by utilizing the auditorium for awards ceremony which will also give us a PA system.  So . . . seems we will grow quickly and take the necessary steps to meet the demands of a much needed event on this level in the Gloucester County area.  We will streamline the number of teams to make for quicker awards also.   So thank you for your comments.  It was a very moving day at times, so many old faces out to honor Brownie, and to recognize such a young field of maturing runners.   The t-shirts held out (barely), plenty of pasta, bottled water . . . and many awards in the tradition of Brownie Moss.  The entire Ross family extends their gratitude . . . to everyone who came out today to run in the honor of Brownie, it meant a great deal to them.  After a meeting with the Ross Family, we will announce, on our web page, how funds will be applied this year to the running programs of Woodbury H.S., Gloucester Catholic H.S. and South Jersey Track Team, and oh yes, a very big thank you to the young bag piper who piped in every runner as they approached the track's finish line.   This year's event was a labor of love, it will only get better on every level next year.  Again, our sincere thank you for being there.
