It was a cold and windy afternoon in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. In fact, if
you were one of the hundreds of runners who competed on New Year's Day, you
have an idea of how cold it was on Saturday with 10-15 MPH winds and
temperatures of about 10F. The sun did little to warm the nine hearty souls
who gathered in the snow for the first annual Beaton Bog Jog, but at 12:30
they took off into the wind. The loop course started and ended on the road
but approximately 3.5 miles of it was on trails of ice and snow groomed by the
local snowmobile association. Within view of the trail was a frozen stream
that occasionally came to life and looked even colder sparkling in the sun.
Meanwhile, Race Directors and proud new homeowners, Roddy and Mark Beaton, had
a fire blazing inside, hot chocolate and cider simmering on the stove, and
cold beer and soda on the porch. After the race, the day included a wonderful
meal of Roddy's famous lasagna, salad, and right from the oven brownies. This
was a real family affair with Massachusetts running sisters Darleen, Cindy and
Kris bringing no less than a half dozen cousins to enjoy hide and seek in the
spacious home, sledding on the snow-covered bog and a few lively games of
foosball with the adults. A lottery of awards ended the afternoon, with
prizes for everyone.
It was a wonderful way to start 1999 with new and old friends. Thanks, Roddy
and Mark for a Bog Day Afternoon!
