Summer Season off to a Good Start at 101st QD 5

Fifty-four runners started off their Memorial Day weekend with a brisk 5-mile run at the QD 5. With the starting temperature at 66 degrees, many parched runners were eagerly looking forward to Nathaniel Haycock's Elm Road water stop.

Jim Maguire was actually the first person across the line, as he calculated that he could best the field with a 21-minute head start. His calculations were correct almost to the second, as he finished 30 seconds ahead of Ken Gartner. Terry Souza, Luc Claessens and Jeff List waged a heated battle for second, third and fourth. They finished within 30 seconds of each other, with Claessens leading the way. Mr. List is tuning up for the upcoming Mount Washington Road Race. Mr. Claessens and Estelle Rose are tuning up for their first marathon, a trail run through the woods of Connecticut. Mr. Souza reportedly is just tuning up for his upcoming June wedding.

The women's race was also extremely close. Lisa Lamont won by a narrow 10-second margin, just ahead of Ellen Mecray and Paula Fratantoni, who finished together. Stace Beaulieu was fourth, just another 30 seconds back.

The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. There is no entry fee and all runners are invited to participate. The course is accurate, wheel measured, and very scenic with a guaranteed tail wind the whole way.
