Ideal Conditions Bring out Biggest QD Five Field of the Year
It was a perfect evening for a run -- clear skies, 42 degrees, a light northeast breeze and daylight even for the last runner. And the crowd turned out. Fifty-two runners toed the start including ten members of Coach Mastriano's soccer team. And the field responded to the beautiful evening by posting fast times including six personal bests.
Bill O'Mara from North Darmouth took the lead from the start and earned his victory beer with a time of 27:52 -- almost two minutes ahead of second-place Scott Ghelfi. However, Scott was pleased with his time because it put him right on target in his training for the Boston Marathon, which is only three weeks away. Following Ghelfi were Terry Souza (30:34), Dan Johnson in 30:37 (only 5 seconds off a PR), and Tim Jones, who grabbed the fifth spot in a PR time of 31:09.
In the women's race, East Falmouth's Nancy Correia captured top honors for the fourth week in a row in 33:56. She was pushed by 46 year old Deb Gabriel of Taunton, who finished in 34:36 running her first QD 5. North Dartmouth's Darlene O'Mara captured third place in 35:43, just edging out Kathleen Thomas of Mashpee, who ran a PR time of 35:53. Laura Caille of Falmouth came in fifth in 37:37
The QD 5 Milers are held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. The course is accurately measured, relatively traffic free, scenic, and has all turns and miles marked. The run is free and self timed. After the run, participants record their times and socialize in the Quarterdeck.
