O'Mara and Correia Top Field in 90th QD Five

Even though there had been spitting snow and rain all day, the weather improved, and 30 runners participated in the 90th running of the QD 5 last Friday evening. QD regular, Bill O'Mara of North Dartmouth took off in the 36 degree chill, left the rest of the field behind, and won easily in 28:15. Second place Terry Souza left his dog at home this week and improved his time, but it was not enough to challenge O'Mara. Brian Nelson, Steve Hamel and Andrew Daley followed the dogless Souza across the line to round out the top five.

East Falmouth's Nancy Correia won the women's race for the second week in a row in 35:09. Her closest challenger was Laura Hutchinson of North Falmouth who finished in 36:04. Third place went to North Dartmouth's Darlene O'Mara who managed to stay on course (she'd strayed a half mile up Woods Hole Road on her previous outing here) and ran a respectable 37:50. There was a three way tie for 4th place between Jessica Baker, Ellen Mecray and Paula Fratantoni who are all training to run next month's Boston Marathon.

For the past few weeks, Frank Mastriano's soccer team has been using the QD 5 to get in shape for their season. Many of his players are showing marked improvement. This week he urged them to stay home because of the threatening weather. But several on his team displayed their enthusiasm, showed up anyway, and ran well.

The Quarterdeck Five is held every Friday evening at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. The event is free, and all runners are welcome. Participants keep their own times and record them in the Quarterdeck afterwards prior to socializing.
