QD 5 Celebrates 2 years

Friday marked the two year anniversary of the QD 5 Miler. It was 2 years ago that 13 runners who ranged in age from 8 years old to close to 60 started off at Tommy Leonard's command to complete the inaugural running of the 5 mile race. What began as a small affair with a handful of runners has now grown to a weekly ritual attracting well over 50 runners each week. In the past 2 years the race has attracted runners from over 30 states and at least 15 foreign countries. In fact a police officer was required last week to keep order among the 60 plus runners in Town Hall Square this week.

Bill Solimine ran by far the fastest time of 1999 to win the race in 26:35. He dropped Ken Gartner at 3 miles and never looked back. Scott Ghelfi took third, not far ahead of the woman's winner, Nancy Cahalane. Ms. Cahalane, who just turned 40, set the woman's 40 and over course record with her time of 30:56. She did give some credit for her outstanding run to her afternoon's "carbo loading" expedition in Mr. Ghelfi's candy store earlier in the afternoon.

Erik Ross broke 32 minutes, as he ran his best 5 mile time and cracked the men's top 5. Former Falmouth High harrier, Margaret Bradley, was the second woman. Bob Gusmini led a trio of very fast 60 year old men across the line, as he along with Richi Williams and Mike Mullo, all went under 36 minutes.

After the race many of the runners enjoyed good food and drink at the annual QD 5 cookout, hosted by Mike Mullo and Eizabeth Jazkowski. The QD 5 will continue on for its 3rd year next Friday at 5:30 at Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self timed event.
