Clean Sweep for Gallimore in BreakTime 5 Km Series
by Don Allison
It was a true summer sizzler at the final BreakTime 5 Km race Thursday, in sharp contrast to last week's cool, damp conditions. The times reflected the increased mercury readings.
This final event in the three-race series was held along the path adjacent to the Muddy River, a bucolic setting hidden away in the shadows of downtown Boston. As was the case in the first two BreakTime races, Peter Gallimore wasted no time in establishing a lead, reaching the mile in 4:59 despite the 90-degree heat. Craig Brenner gave game chase, but was 20 seconds back by the mile mark.
Peter shifted into a slightly lower gear, but still cruised along swiftly, making it look much easier than onlookers all knew it really was. Brian Hall, last year's Muddy River winner, improved his time by two seconds (17:02) in claiming second place. Brenner finished third in 17:38. Michelle Cutler followed up last week's women's win with another here, clocking 18:58 on the two-loop course.
Peter and Michelle were gracious in donating their winning prizes to the raffle. In all, gift certificates worth $50 each to area Boston restaurants, including Cheers and the Top of the Hub, were awarded to four lucky winners.
Thanks too all runners who turned up to make this series a success this year. Thanks also to the volunteers who made this series run smoothly: Roberta Allison, Rick Doubleday, Ruth Kessler, Henry Kettell, Ray Gonzales, Carol Pezzuto, Jamie Auciello, and Carol Goodrow.
