Two Down, One To Go For Gallimore in BreakTime 5 Km Series
by Don Allison
Would someone please keep this man company? From the front, the second in the three-race BreakTime 5 Km series looked very much like the first race last week, as Peter Gallimore shot off from the starting line, dispatching of the competition in the first half-mile. Making it look deceptively easy, Gallimore cruised through one mile in 4:55 and two in 10:08, en route to a winning time of 15:57. That is the second-fastest ever time in the two -year history of the BreakTime series, bettered only by Scott Lundquist's 15:29 in last year's Boston Esplanade race. Peter collected yet another gift certificate to a Boston area restaurant for his victory. He's stackin' 'em like cordwood!
Seasoned veteran Marty Lechleider gave brief chase, but settled nicely into second place, where he stayed for the entire race, clocking 16:40 to win the master's division, setting a new master's BT record in the process. Garth Shaneyfelt and Craig Brenner finished in third and fourth place respectively, as they did last week.
Last week's women's winner Lauren Heyl was back again this week, but came out second best in a battle with Michelle Cutler, who clocked 18:19 for the victory, a new women's BT record. Like Gallimore, Michelle cruised along smoothly, making sub six-minute pace look easier than it actually is.
Next Thursday wraps up the 1999 BreakTime 5 Km series. The race will be run at Noon on the beautiful Muddy River bike path, starting at the Longwood Ave stop on the Green Line "D" train. If you can run five-minute pace, please consider running. You will certainly have company&emdash;it's getting awfully lonely for Peter out there!
