Gallimore Gallops to Break Time 5 Km Victory

The Charles River was at its sparkling best for the 1999 Break Time 5 Km in Cambridge Thursday, the first in a three-race series held at Noontime on successive Thursdays in different downtown locations. This year the timing of the races is such that corporate runners can get in tune-up races for the Chase Corporate Challenge, which will be held on the Tuesday after the final Break Time race.

In this the first of the three races, runners took a loop around the Lotus Development building and the Sonesta hotel before heading west on the Charles River path, almost to the Mass Ave bridge, before turning around and heading for home.

Peter Gallimore burst from the start in full flight, establishing a 50-yard lead before the race was two minutes old. Before the race was five minutes old, Gallimore had galloped past the mile in 4:53. He continued at top-end speed to the turnaround, startling non-racing noontime joggers and walkers along the way with his quickness. A pesky ocean breeze provided the biggest challenge of the day to Gallimore, but he met that test too, reaching the finish line in 16:05, 31 seconds up on his nearest pursuer, Ryan Hunt.

Four runners bested 17 minutes, and the venerable Dave Tyler was next across the line, winning the masters in 18:35. "I was trying to take it easy today and save something for Saturday," (The USATF NE 10-km), Tyler was heard commenting after the race. Lauren Heyl captured the women's division, clocking 18:52, just over six-minute pace.

The second race in the series in next Thursday at the Lee Pool by the Boston Esplanade.
