DOODY SHATTERS QD 5 COURSE RECORD
What a week in the world of running. First the world record for the mile was broken by over a second in Rome, then the QD 5 course record was shattered by 30 seconds in Falmouth! While former QD 5 course record holder, Charlie Stock was floating around in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean doing research, Tom Doody of Pelham, NH snuck into town and blitzed the QD 5 field with a time of 25:34, 30 seconds faster than Charlie Stock's old record of 26:02, set one year ago. Mr. Doody was on his way home back to New Hampshire after a week's vacation in Hyannis. Perhaps realizing that the Falmouth Track Club currently has no one capable of coming close to running such a time, he did sheepishly apologize for breaking the record by such a large margin.
Bob Hodge of Clinton and former course record holder of the Mount Washington Road Race, finished third behind Ken Gartner. Hodge, actually got lost in Town Hall Square, only a hundred yards from the finish line. The dazed runner was spinning around aimlessly, searching for the right direction, before Tom Doody dashed out and saved the day by redirecting Hodge to the finish line.
Although she didn't break any records, Sarah Keller had a very impressive QD 5 debut. She bested a very strong women's field with a very quick time of 32:22. Laura Hutchinson, a runner for Falmouth High School was third, just a minute behind the winner. Ellen Heher of Cotuit took a minute off her time of last week. She ran 7 minute per mile pace and finished 3rd for the second week in a row.
For Quarterdeck bartender Brent Hawkins, it was his longest run since he suffered a very bad fractured hip a year and a half ago. The "Hawk" finished in 37:50, a "post-surgery" personal best. After the run, Bob Hodge who is another broken leg victim, and the Hawk compared surgical scars as they quaffed down cooling beverages at the Quarterdeck.
The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. There is no charge for this free, self-timed event.
