Fourth of July Weekend Brings Out Biggest Field of the Year at QD 5
Seventy-one runners started off their Fourth of July weekends with the bang of the starting gun at the QD 5 Miler. The game plan for most of the runners was to run as hard as they could to the 3 mile mark and then let the strong 25 mph south west tailwind blow them back to Town Hall Square for the last 2 miles.
The starategy certainly worked well for Jessica Baker, as she rocketed home with a personal best time of 35:14 to take first for the women. She ran the entire way with her jubilant boy friend, Chris Reddy, but it isn't quite certain as to who was pacing who. Pauline Lim edged Ellen Heher by 9 seconds to take second place.
On the men's side, Ken Gartner was barely able to hold off a contingent of four very fast triathaletes. Jerry Holmes, a former Ohio State University steeplechaser trailed Gartner by a scant 30 seconds despite the fact that he was wearing a pair of very heavy training shoes. Ulandt Kim took 3rd with a personal best time of 28:42, while Justin Neviackas took 4th. D. J. Fairbanks rounded out the top five. Mr. Fairbanks had arrived in town just minutes before the start, after completing a long drive from his home in Atlanta, Georgia.
In a battle of fathers and daughters, 14 year old Kayla Halloran of Megansett edged her father Shep Halloran by 20 seconds, with a very good time of 38:20. Estelle Rose edged her father, Eric Rose who was visiting her from Paris, France, by a margin of 40 seconds.
Perhaps the highlight of the entire night was the finish of Carolyn Bird, who chugged across the finish line with a time of 56:35 to finish her last race in the 50 to 59 year old age division. As of the Fourth of July, Ms. Bird will be running in the 60 and over age divison.
The Qd 5 Milers are held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self timed event, and all are welcome to participate.
