71 Runners in Friday's QD 5
It was another hot, hazy and humid night for Friday's QD 5 Miler. Although there were a few personal bests turned in, most of the 71 runners simply ran out of gas and slowed considerably in the last 2 miles. The neighborhood water stops on Elm Road were sorely missed as most of the children were probably having a good time at the Barnstable County Fair.
Jerry Holmes, a 23 year old physical therapy intern at Falmouth Hospital led the way. With a time of 26:50, he was the 4th different QD 5 winner to break 27 minutes over the past 4 weeks. With Ken Gartner taking 3rd and Marcie Svoboda also finishing back in the pack, the Falmouth Hospital physical therapy department was well represented.
Last week the youngest runner in the top 5 was 37 years old. This week the young fresh legs took over. Twenty-four year old Charlie Stock finished a strong 2nd, 22 year-old Justin Neviackas took 4th, and 19 year-old Duncan Smith-Rohrberg rounded out the top five. Both Stock and Smith-Rohrberg are on the comeback trail.
Sarah Keller (no relation to the infamous Seagull Six race director Fred Keller) made it a perfect 2 for 2 at the QD 5. Although the heat slowed her time by a minute over last weeks effort, she still won comfortably by almost 4 minutes. Karin Lebherz Smith, took 2nd place as she turned in one of the few personal best times of the night. Mary Olenick and Jessica Baker finished together in 3rd place.
Finishing way back in the pack were former QD 5 course record holder Heather Pola and Sarah Correia. The two women decided to take their time and enjoy the scenery for a change. They joined up with Wally Ballou and had a grand old time. As they approached the finish line, Wally the perfect gentleman let the two young ladies cross the line first.
The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular running events on Cape Cod. All runners are welcome to participate in this free self-timed event.
