Fumarola and Gartner Tie, Callaghan Tops Women's field in 128th QD5

It was 5:15 and Quarterdeck bartender Jeff Fumarola was frantically watching the door, waiting for his replacement to show up so he could make the 5:30 start of the QD 5. Fortunately he showed up 5 minutes later and Fumarola dashed out to catch the start with only minutes to spare.

Courtney Bird was not so fortunate. The temperature outside may have been perfect for running at 46 degrees, but Bird was home in bed with a temperature of 103 degrees and climbing. This was definitely not a good temperature for running. He instead went to his doctor, who barred Bird from the event for at least the next two weeks.

Edith Callaghan was the woman's winner for the second week in a row. She finished 30 seconds ahead of Kris Tholke. Young Marjorie Wainright took third. For the men, Jeff Fumarola and Ken Gartner were the first across the line. Last week's winner, Justin Neviackas, was third. Neviackas is prepping for a marathon in South Carolina next week.

For Mary Olenick, it was probably her last QD 5 for a while. The jubilant mother-to-be will be adopting a baby next week, and according to several experienced mothers at the Quarterdeck, she may be "very busy" for a while.

The QD 5 is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge, and all runners are invited to participate. For the next few weeks, the runners will get into the festive spirit by warming up around the lighted town green.
