Another Record Field at The QD 5
With 84 runners on Friday night it was another record field for the QD 5 Miler. They enjoyed the unseasonable dry air which was very conducive for fast times. It was not an easy task to crack the top 5 this week, as all of the first 5 were under 29 minutes. Bill Solimine led the way with a time of 26:38, with Dave Osmond of Australia only 10 seconds back. Charlie Stock was 3rd with a time of 26:57. Duncan Smith-Rohrberg took third, saving some energy for his upcoming fire-walk which was to be held the following night. Justin Neviakas, the 22 year old scientist/triathalete rounded out the top 5, as he cracked the 29 minute barrier for the first time in his career.
Sarah Keller again ran uncontested to another win, with another personal best time of 31:45. Her fast times at the last few QD's earned her a good starting position in Sunday's Falmouth Road Race. The next 4 women all finished within 25 seconds of each other. Karin Lebherz Smith was 2nd, running 35:50 and 14 year old Kayla Halloran was third with a very good time of 36 minutes flat. Lisa Lamont and Laura Caille followed in 4th and 5th.
Perhaps the highlight of the night was the performance of Chris Reddy who symbolically broke his 5 mile personal best time by 30 seconds on his thirtieth birthday. Unfortunately his girlfriend was not able to witness his momentous feat, as she was off preparing his surprise birthday party.
Several local runners sat out Friday's run to save their energy for Saturday's Brew Run in Brewster. With a 10 dollar post-entry fee and T-shirts, prizes, and refreshments galore, this was one of the best road race bargains on the Cape.
The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no entree fee for this self timed event, and all runners are invited to participate.
