Runners Battle Heat and Humidity

It simply was not a good night for running at Friday's QD 5 Miler. It was very hazy, hot, and very humid, yet 3 people some how ran personal best times. It was a small field of only 44 runners, as afternoon rain may have discouraged some from running, while others were simply experiencing their "post Falmouth Road Race slump".

A group of 5 runners set out at a very conservative 6 minute per mile pace. Ken Gartner held on for first, but the real race was for second place. Luc Claessens and Steve Hamel entered Town Hall Square together. In the end it was Claessens, the Dutch soccer player who won the sprint to the finish. Hamel finished one second back with a personal best time of 30:45. Bill Riley picked off Michele Bianchini for 4th.

Bianchini, the Venetian glass importer, had just returned to Woods Hole after a two-month stay in his homeland. He has again become a familiar sight, racing through the hills of Sippewissett on his daily training runs, wearing his distinctive bright blue singlet.

Pauline Lim edged out Lynne Robillard for first in the woman's race. Lim ran a personal best time of 34:47. Stace Beaulieu was third, also with a personal best time. Finishing 4th was 38 year old Karin Lebherz Smith, as she bested 14 year old Kayla Halloran.

The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event, and a cool, dry night is being hoped for next week.
