Course Records Fall in QD 5
It was a day of records at Friday's QD 5 Miler. With 89 runners showing up to enjoy the pleasant 73 degree night, it was another record field.
The outcome of the women's race was never in doubt from the start. Tetyana Pozantrova of the Ukraine took off with the men's lead pack which went through 3 miles at 5:20 pace. She slowed slightly as she battled the headwind on Surf Drive, but still obliterated the women's course record with a time of 27:36. Until now, no one had come within a minute of Shirley Frye's time of 29:00 which she ran almost 2 years ago. The 44 year-old Ukranian was second in the master's woman's division at the Falmouth Road Race.
It was a tight race for second as two of the fastest women masters runners on the Cape battled it out. In the end it was Nancy Cahalane edging out Lynne Robillard by only 20 seconds. Former Falmouth High runner Margaret Bradley was 4th in a time of 33:36, which normally is fast enough to win the event.
Not to be out done by his mother, 13 year-old Eugene Zagoruyko raced home with a time of 34:06 to break the junior boy's course record. Apparently Eugene is fairly new to distance running and has done only minimal training.
For the men, Charlie Andrews of New York finished off his week long Cape vacation with a win at the QD 5 Miler, just as he did last year. Ken Gartner and Charlie Stock followed in 2nd and 3rd, as the two bewildered Falmouth Track Club runners were just able to hold off the women's winner. D. J. Fairbanks fell 9 seconds short of his summer goal of cracking 30 minutes but he did manage to break into the tough top 5. Finishing in 8th was 63 year-old Bill Riley, who's time of 31:31 broke Mike Mullo's Veterans course record by over a minute.
The Qd 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event.
