Veteran Frontrunners Dogged All the Way in Friday's QD 5

The numbers were slightly down at Friday's QD 5 Miler, as some were deterred by the cool, rainy night, and others were resting for Sunday's Seagull Six road race. Nancy Correia again won the women's race, as her time of 34:19 was good enough to place 4th overall. Maura Bennett of Sandwich took second, just a couple of minutes back. Tucker Tierney had a much tougher time of it in the men's race, winning only by a nose. Tierney, who is fairly new to distance running, caused havoc with the two running veterans with his bizzarre, unrefined running style. Instead of holding an even and steady pace, the newcomer continuosly spurted and surged and often weaved all over the road, at times even skirting through several front yards. Despite having to make at least 5 or 6 emergency pit stops, the young speedster had no trouble keeping up with the pace set by Gartner and Souza. As the trio reached Elm road, Tierney looked in vain for the neighborhood water stop, but alas, it was still too early in the season for the stop to be operational. Undaunted he dropped down and slurped up a mouthful of water from a relatively clean puddle in full stride, while his two running companions looked on in amazement. The threesome actually picked up the pace running into the strong headwind on Surf Drive. They entered Town Hall Square in unison, but Tierney spotted a cat up ahead and surged across the line first. Afterwards the QD 5 runners socialized and quaffed refreshments in the warm Quarterdeck, with the exception of the happy race winner who chose to stay outside tethered to a sign pole. The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge and all runners are invited to participate.
