by Brian Brodrick

ATLANTA, Aug. 28 - Daniel Hill, a 2000 Australian Olympic hopeful and Midtown resident won today's Fifth Annual Salomon Smith Barney/Robinson Humphrey Atlanta Mile over a strong field in 4 minutes, 14.24 seconds. The 1998 Georgia State graduate and former Panther standout outkicked former NCAA All American Amos Kipyegon down the final stretch of the race, which was held at Centennial Olympic Park.

"I just had a bit more at the end," said Hill, who crossed the finish waving his finger in the air to celebrate his second win in a row at the event. "I've had a run of good luck lately, and this just keeps it going."

Hill earned $500 for his effort, while the second- and third-place finishers earned $300 and $100.

Kipyegon and fellow Kenyan Jacob Kirwa (6th, 4:30.98) traveled from Chapel Hill, N.C. for the race. Chattanooga's Nic Crider was third overall in 4:17.51, Marietta's Malcolm Campbell was fourth (4:22.50) and Cartersville's David Matherne was fifth in 4:23.21.

Donna Garcia, a U.S. World Cross Country Team member this year, dominated the women's race with a 4:53.07 clocking. Garcia is a member of the Georgia Foundation for Athletic Excellence, one of the chief beneficiaries of the race. The GFAE is a unique non-profit organization providing support for Georgia's amateur athletes.

Former Villanova star Kim Certain (5:02.77) held off the furious kick of the Atlanta Track Club's Beth Old (5:03.01) for third. Old, a 1997 Georgia Tech All-American, is also a GFAE athlete. Fourth place went to Barbara Jarnigan of Lilburn in 5:07.74 while fifth went to Jennifer Croft of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. in 5:09.70.

The Georgia Foundation for Athletic Excellence is a unique non-profit organization providing support for Georgia's amateur athletes.
