Camden-Clark Parkersburg Half-Marathon: USA Championship

Parkersburg, WV

August 22, 1998

DeHaven, Hickman Win USA Half-Marathon Titles

Rod DeHaven and Libbie Hickman captured USA Half-Marathon crowns at the Parkersburg Half-Marathon on Saturday, August 22. Under warm, humid conditions, DeHaven, 31, from Madison, Wisconsin, who won the 1994 title, ran 1:03:42 to produce a convincing win. Peter DeLaCerda finished second over a minute back (1:04:48) with John Sence third (1:05:06).

In a close women's race, Hickman, 33, from Ft. Collins, Colorado, the 1997 Bolder Boulder winner, won her first USA road title with a four second victory over 1992 Olympian, Shelly Steely, 1:13:29 to 1:13:33. Trina Painter, the 1992 Parkersburg winner, returned to form with a solid third place showing (1:14:00).

Both champions earned $6000, while the top five men and top two women earned automatic berths on the USA team for the IAAF World Half-Marathon Championships in Zurich, Switzerland on September 27.

As national runner-up, Steely, the 1998 USA 25m champion, picked up 12 more Circuit points to secure the women's USARC Grand Prix title and the accompanying $6000. With two USARC races remaining, no one can pass Steely who has 58 points.

In the men's USARC, Sence, the 1997 Grand Prix champion, holds a two-point lead over DeHaven, 31 points to 29. The next USARC races are on Labor Day, September 7, the New Haven Labor Day 20km (men) and Park Forest Scenic 10 Mile (women).
