"I don't recall ever beating Bea Marie [Altieri]", said Baltimore's
Denise Knickman after she had done just that at the 22nd Metric Marathon in
Howard County. Denise's race nemisis had assumed her patented lead in the
women's race around two miles and in the next few miles seemed destined to
win again. Indeed, at the nine mile mark, Ms. Knickman actually considered
that she might not finish the race at all. But she gulped down an
All-Sport and plunged onward, gaining significantly on Altieri in the last
few miles of the 16.3-mile race. Finally, only about 3/4 mile from the
finish, Knickman made her move and surged into the lead. She went on to win
in 1:42:26, putting over 50 seconds between herself and second-place
Altieri in the last half mile. Not only did Denise win, she also set a
personal record for the 26.2 km distance. "It's been a good day all
around," commented Knickman, who had recently qualified for the U.S.
Olympic Trials with a 2:47 at the Chicago Marathon. "All that marathon
training really helped."
The men's race saw local favorite Mark Gilmore hold the lead for a
good 14 miles of the race, although he was shadowed for most of that
distance by one Chris Katon of Washington, DC, who had never run a race in
the area before the Metric. "He kind of tracked me more than pushed me,"
remembered Gilmore, who tried to put away his pursuer at 13 miles. The
strategy failed, however, and Katon instead pushed into the lead a mile
later and won in 1:29:07. Gilmore hung on for second place 40 seconds
behind. Katon turned out to have the credentials of a champion: he owns a
sub-four minute mile, ran a 49:20 at the recent Army 10-Miler, and trains
with the Reebok Enclave racing team in Washongton.
Gilmore and Katon left their closest pursuers, Robert Johnson and
Dave Berardi pretty much in the dust, and nobody else in the field finished
within about mile of the top four. "I got all the bagels and bananas I
could eat," commented Mr. Berardi, who has won the Metric in past years.
Ironman triathlete George "PowerBar" Altieri stunned Tony Basile to
win the Metric masters' championship in 1:37:26. Basile had been winning master's titles at races all year and has even won a number of races outright, but Altieri managed to win by about four minutes. The ageless
Rose Malloy of Annapolis not only won the women's 50-54 age group, but she
also took honors as the top woman master runner in the entire Metric. In
fact, she finished only 20 seconds behind Ronnie Wong, winner of the men's
50-54 age group.
A total of 294 runners finished the Metric Marathon, which enjoyed
the finest weather in the history of the event. Perhaps because of the
beneficent weather, the 16.3-km race had a completion rate of 90% of the
entrants, the highest in the history of the event.
Those not wishing to do the full Metric could run a 5 km fun-run,
which started at the same time and place as the Metric. Columbia's own
Stewart Pineo beat the top two runners from Ft. Meade, John Keenan and Mike
Adams, to win the short distance race in 16:57. Vicki Lang ran her best
race since giving birth to her second child and easily won the women's race
in 19:33. Dennis Albright of Mt. Savage overwhelmed the men's masters
field (17:49); and Susan Gleazer was the first master women in 23:39. A total of 162 participated in the 5 km event.
The top four male and female winners in the Metric took home cash
prizes, while age group winners earned gift certificates from Feet First of
Wilde Lake. All winners received commemorative paper-weights. All
entrants received a t-shirt, a Harvest Bar, and Orudis KT pain reliever,
which many of them needed after the ordeal. The Metric runners also
received free Power Gel at the half-way point of the race. After finishing
their races, runners consumed Aquafina water, Pepsi Cola, and Ledo's pizza, in addition to Produce Galore bananas and Bagel Bin bagels. In fact, so
many pizzas were ordered for the race that some runners were able to take
one home after the awards ceremony. Other sponsors included All Sport,
College Park Bicycles, and Nightmare Graphics. Apple Ford donated the use
of a magnificent Eddie Bauer Explorer, which served as the official pace
car of the Metric Marathon.
Brad Speierman made his debut as director of the Metric Marathon
and 5 km, which had been staged annually by the Howard County Striders
since 1976. This was Brad's first turn as race director of any kind.
Although the two events seemed to go along without much trouble, Mr.
Speierman, who is also a triathlete, admitted that directing the Metric was
"definitely more hectic than a triathlon!"
