Smith-Rohrberg and Olenick win 75th QD 5

It had been almost 2 months since anyone broke the 30 minute barrier in the QD 5 Miler. Apparently all that was needed was a pair of fresh young legs. Duncan Smith-Rohrberg drove into Town Hall Square at 5:29, jumped out of his car and raced to the starting line with 5 seconds to spare. The former Falmouth High harrier reeled in D.J. Fairbanks of Atlanta, GA after 1 mile, and at 3 miles he dropped Ken Gartner. He had a winning time of 28:30, with Gartner 30 seconds behind. Fairbanks, who is used to much warmer weather, held on for 3rd.

The women's race was also a close one. Mary Olenick didn't catch Franny Haney of Duxbury until 4 miles. Olenick then pulled ahead to also win by 30 seconds with a time of 37:09. Kris Tholke followed in 3rd and Jessica Baker took 4th.

The pleasant 50 degree night was enjoyed by 29 runners. Among them was former Falmouth Track Club Coach, Ron Lafreniere. It was a welcome surprise to see "Coach Ron", especially for the runners who ran under his tutelage for many years until he moved to Colorado 3 years ago.

The QD 5 Miler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square. All runners are invited to run this free event and socialize afterwards at the Quarterdeck.
