Quarterdeck 5M

Falmouth, MA

December 11, 1998

Gartner and Leonard Top Field in 7th QD 5

While downtown Falmouth was filled with people dressed up for the Dickens Christmas celebration, Town Hall Square was filled with 18 warmly dressed runners in reflective vests. Actually only 16 were warmly dressed, as Joe McMenamy and Jon Sokol, both 13 years old, seemed oblivious to the cold 43 degree night. The two boys, clad in shorts and t-shirts, finished together in 5th place with a time of 36:26. For McMenamy it was 4 minutes faster than last week's effort. Perhaps the awaiting warmth of the Quarterdeck made him run faster. Dan Johnson of Woods Hole made an impressive QD 5 debut with a time of 30:49 to place 2nd, not far behind Ken Gartner. Fairly new to the sport, it was his first 5 mile race ever, so obviously a PR. Dana Smith chugged in next, barely holding off Charles Fobert of Mansfield. Mr. Fobbert and his friend Frank Rodrigues of Norton got the "long distance" award of the night. Mary Leonard of Bourne garnered her first QD 5 victory, running 45:15. Laurie Fife and Alice Child, 2 more new blossoming runners, finished together in 2nd 6 minutes later. Carolyn Bird rounded out the women's field. The QD 5 MIler is held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge and all runners are invited to run. Runners are encouraged to wear reflective running gear through the winter. Although the Quarterdeck will be closed on Christmas day, the run will go off as usual from Town Hall Square.
