15th Focus On Women 5K

Ten years ago, Mary Lammi of the Central Mass Striders and Darlene Beckford of the Liberty Athletic Club waged a great 1-2 battle at the 5th annual running of the Focus On Women 5K. Lammi came from behind in the final mile to win the race and set a still existing course course record of 16:15, while Beckford ran what remains today the second fastest time ever in the history of the race - 16:26.

Lammi returned for this years 15th running and had no difficulty in winning the race. While she did not challenge her decade old course record, she not only finished first overall, but was also the first master.

From the "bolt out of the blue" department, second-place Kara Patterson of Worcester, who finished in 18:15, was competing in a road race for the first time. In the new records department, Laura Smith from Wachusett Regional High School finished in 18:26 to break Erin Dromgoole's age 15-19 record of 18:34 and Nancy Cox-Lund of Springfield took eight seconds off Berna Finley's previous age 60-69 record of 25:31.
