Break Time 5 Km Finale: Muggy Running Along the Muddy River
By Don Allison

The viscosity of the air at the third Break Time 5 Km race in Boston on Thursday, June 25 was nearly as thick as the Muddy River, along which the participants ran in the finale of the three race series. Boston had a serious case of the muggies, which slowed the times down just a little from the first two editions of the event. Many were sweating freely-before the gun went off!

Veteran competitor Mike Kelleher took the pace out from the start on the quiet dirt foot path, looking as if he would run away with it. But Brian Hall, biding his time, took over just before the mile mark and went unchallenged for the rest of the race. Brian clocked 17:06, his patience finally rewarded, finally capturing first place after coming in second and third in the first two Break Time races. Brian also was the overall series winner among the eight runners who completed all three races.

Young Kara Patterson won the women's race, as she did last week. Also like last week, Kara slipped under six minutes per mile, an impressive feat given that most others were slowed by the hot and humid conditions. Crossing the line alongside Kara was Craig Brenner, who won the coveted first Back Bay Road Runner designation. Craig fended off Jamie Auciello by 24 seconds for the honor.

Thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered for the three Break Time events. Special mention goes out not only to the eight runners who completed all three races, but to Karen Cormier, who volunteered at all three races, giving up her lunch hour for three consecutive Thursdays to help out. Karen is a terrific runner in her own right who easily could have contended for the women's title in any of the runs.

Many nice gift certificates were distributed after the race, several in a series-ending raffle, including one for lunch for two at the Top of the Hub restaurant. The entire proceeds from the three Break Time races will towards the Jimmy Fund for Cancer Research. We look forward to bringing the series back in 1999, and maybe expanding to other towns. It's a great way to get a quick run in during your lunch hour, meet other runners, enjoy refreshments, win nice prizes and raise money for a good cause. You can't beat it!
