BIG MAN RUN III

Dan Solomon's statement "I'm in trouble" wasn't entirely correct when he saw
all the timber that showed up at the 3rd "Annual and Not the Last Big Man Run
III cause he took home $20.00 for 8th in the Masters Division, but his
opinion was right cause this was no "Fat Man Mile"...another quote from days
gone by.....
We had some steele show up from all over the country for this annual
Clydesdale Gathering where everyone comes to duke it out to see who will be
the new "King Clyde" for a year....and for the 2nd year in a row we have a new
"King Clyde" in the name of Vincent Kowtowski of Worcester, Massachusetts.
Vincent is a past competitor in the Australian Eco-Challenge and was on the
U.S.A. Duathalon Team. He won against some strong competition in Dan Huron, a
police officer from Buffalo, NY who hasn't eaten meat since 1988 and
returning
1997 Big Man Run II winnah and current "King Clyde" Ron "Savage" Cavage who
even tho coming in third overall shaved off one second from last years winning
time...hopefully next year Mr. Cavage will opt for the Marvin Hagler style of
training and preparation .....and lay off the vacation at Martha's Vineyard,
wine & women and vacation until after he get's "his title" back......
The athletes are starting to flock to the event as evidenced by the times this
year....1st place time in the 1997 190-210lbs. open division got you 5th place
this year and.......most notable is 1996 BMR I winnah, Mike Kraemer who raced
to a 38:45 in 1996, 38:32 in 1997 and in 1998 blew out a 36:57....and in the
226lber+ open division, SRR's Jeff Durso-Finley of Glendale, RI
crushing last years time by 2 minutes & 54 seconds
and clearly whuppin' another "fast" SRR'er and 1997 226lbs.+ winnah, Brian
"Lead Balls" Smith by 3 minutes and 18 seconds this year......these two have
developed quite a racing competition and Big Man camraderie that is really
seen in the sport of running...
There was a nice battle between the ole farts of the race in Manny Arruda of
Somerville, MA and Mike Petrarca of North Providence, RI both
SRR'ers with Manny Arruda taking 1st place in the Masters Division ....next
year we are considering a Sr. Masters division (50+)..for the really ole
farts, Mike Petrarca being one of them at 52 and one of the classiest SRR'ers
in the stable...
Can't get much better than this year.....with 40 more "racing" this year than
last year, 6 more guys left with dates, good beer at the third watering hole,
ESPN magazine and New England Runner both writing stories for the next edition
of their respective sports magazines on the Big Man Run III, the trumpet
players didn't blow a bad note, the volunteers didn't hang the race directors
for not getting T-Shirts, Bob Fitzgerald, editor of NER made it back alive
with Peter Brook driving him in the lead vehicle and we all had fun and that's
what it's all about!!!!!
