3rd Annual Horsethief Canyon Trail Run
Sept 19, 1998 Horsethief Canyon at Kanopolis State Park, KS
What sets the HCTR apart from other races? If you ask one of the seven
returning runners maybe they would tell you it's the challenge. It's the
same course every year, but never the same race. Due to conditions on the
trail it can be a new challenge each year, last year it was the length of
the prairie grass, this year it was depth of sand. The sand didn't seem to
slow the winner, Marc Friesen, down though. After running 44:28 last year
Marc came back this year to take the 6-pk challenge, the only time we've had
someone accept the challenge. Marc cut 2:25 off last year's time and took
home a 6 pack of Mt Dew.
I've included the times and finish places from the previous years races,
just in case you all wanted to do some comparisons. Two runners besides the
winner had better times than last year, Mike Classen moved up to 4th place
and cut 2.5 minutes off his finish time and Mike Allen finished 6th overall
both years but cut 1 minute and 26 seconds off his time. Charlene Jones was
the women's winner again this year and is the only person we've had run all
3 years of this race. Phil and I were very happy to note we had 7 runners
return for this year's race as we hope to keep building this race for all
those with an adventurous spirit as well as those "newbies to trails".
Once again we would like to thank John from Tri Rivers Running Club for
helping us with the timing. Jacob Peppiatt for helping direct the runners.
John Peppiatt for helping with the trail sweep and clean up. Dane and the
other Parks personnel for their help putting the water out. Most of all, we
would like to thank all of you for coming out and running the trail.
As always we would welcome any suggestions or comments on this race. Hope to
see you all again next year.
