Club Kokomo's 4M Age Graded Handicap Race/4M Walk

Kokomo, IN

November 8, 1998

Results courtesy of the Club Kokomo Roadrunners.
Club Kokomo's "4 Mile Age Graded Handicap Race & 4 Mile Walk" was the largest CKR club race ever. Normally we draw about 30 to 35 runners for one of our "club runs," but today we had 74 entries and 71 finishers. We advertised the race on the internet and got it in a couple of newspapers.

Everyone that ran today had nothing but great things to say about the format. A handicapped head start was given to everyone based on their age and sex, with the exception of 24 and 25 year old men who started at 0:00 on the count-down timer.

The runners ran about three miles total on the pavement through Highland Park in Kokomo and about one mile in the grass at half-mile mile increments. The course was very scenic and it gave the runners plenty of opportunity to see where the competition was at various points through out the entire race. I don't believe that their is a prettier race around these parts.

We were about a week-and-a-half late for the peak fall colors, but the race day conditions were great for running. It was overcast and a little cold just standing around, which was perfect if you were running. Unfortunately, my wife, son and I were directing the race today and couldn't run it, too. Simone, my wife, made stain glass light catchers that were awarded to the first seven men and five women who crossed the finish line. These awards were also well received and had people mad at themselves for not running harder.

After the race the participants, volunteers, and spectators consumed 8 dozen donuts, 3 dozen cookies, 3 gallons of Gatorade, 2 1/2 gallons of water and about 5 gallons of hot or cold (their choice) apple cider.

All in all, a great success! Can't wait until next year - neither can many of the runners that were overheard talking about the race, especially if I can get Simone to make up another original design light catcher award for '99 edition.
