96 Olympic Trials marathoner, Kevin Collins of Syracuse took advantage of a slip by
Rochester's Scott Bagley with just a little over 400 meters to go to win the men's 8K in
the 1997 Upstate New York Cross Country Series Championships held at soggy LeMoyne
College in SyracCollins lead the way as his Charger teammates put an exclamation point
on their finest season in years ,sweeeping the Championship Day race with 15 points.
John Trowse of the Chargers became the eighth different Open Men's
Champion in the eight year history of the series with his third place finish.
Rick Hoebeke of Ithaca's High Noon AC continued his mastery of the Upstate
Series by winning his fifth consectutive series Masters title. High Noon teammate Herb
Engmann recaptured the title that eluded him last year in the Veteran Men's division by
outdueling veteran teammate Jim Bisogni.
On the women's side, Gretchen Welch, 22, of the Genesee Valley Harriers
became the second consecutive Rochester area women to capture the Upstate title. She
just nipped former Cortland St. All-American Heidi Swarts of the Syracuse Chargers by
two points to capture the Open Women's title, succeeding Linda Grossman of GVH.
Welch, Grossman and Audra Knapp were instrumental in leading GVH to the first- ever
series team title in just their second year of existence.
Patti Ford on the Syracuse Chargers became the first runner, man or women,
to win a series Open title (she won in 1992) and a series Masters title by winning 4 of the
5 series races this year. Her Charger teammates also chipped in and captured the
Women's Masters team title.
The Masters Men's team title went to the Blade Runners, a collection of Upstate's
finest masters. Led by captain Bill McMullen of Batavia, the Blade Runners had runners
from as far west as Buffalo and as far east as Auburn & Seneca Falls. Their traveling
motorhome was a fixture on the New York State Thruway this fall, but their efforts and
time were well worth it as they brought home the Championship by winning 4 of the 5 series
races.
