4th Annual Sea to Summit Triathlon
Point to point from New Castle, NH to summit of Mt Washington, Elevation
6,288 ft.
July 12, 1997
Robert Nagle, winner of the first Sea to Summit race in 1994 reclaimed his
crown, while first-timer Torrey McMillian claimed the women's top spot.
34 participants started "the ultimate endurance journey" at 6:00 a.m. on
the Island of New Castle, next to Portsmouth, NH. First out of the water in
1:46 was Stu Olsen, a minute later Nagle followed, and with a speedy
transition they started the bike together. 15th overall out of the water
was the Torrey McMillian, followed closely by Sue Edelen. This was
McMillian's first multisport race and at only 24, she was showing the
composure and pacing of a veteran. The 90 mile bike route goes from Dover
up through North Conway to Pinkham Notch. Stu Olsen took a wrong turn and
was penalized 5:00 minutes, but he still managed to begin the run in first
place, a minute ahead of Nagle. Nagle's racing resume includes adventure
races around the world. He was the top American at the Ultra Marathon des
Sables (Morroco), and captain of the winning '96 Eco Challenge in British
Columbia. Behind the leaders there was jockeying for position. Eric Grimm
started the run over 10 minutes behind the lead duo. Next came Steve
Riddle,
last year's fastest biker (but one of the slowest paddlers) and he again
posted an incredible bike split of 4:10 (which includes T1, T2). Carl
Johnston and Don Dwight started the run almost 25 minutes behind the
leaders but in this cruel third leg of the race they were still in the
hunt.
In the women's field Torrey McMillian held onto her lead during the
bike portion. Cathi Remington started the bike 25 minutes behind McMillian
but moved up through the field and was only 10 minutes behind her at the
begining of the run. The price of such a fast bike split tooks its toll on
Remington as she dropped another 10 minutes to McMillian during the climb.
McMillian topped the mountain looking calm and cool as though she was out
for a stroll. Meanwhile Nagle was putting the hammer down and running away
from Olsen. Riddle was gaining on Olsen but fell 2 minutes short at the
summit, if only he hadn't spotted the lead duo over 30 minutes during the
paddle! Dwight moved up to claim the fourth spot. Ed Duggan, third fastes
t paddler of the day took it a little easier on the bike and run to claim
the final spot of the day, almost 4 hours behind Nagle.
