35th Fred S. Warren 5.5M

There may be more, there most likely are more, but CR knows of only two and both of them ran in this year's - the 35th - Fred S. Warren Race. The two are Larry Olsen of Millis, Massachusetts and Jim Murphy of Mendon, Massachusetts. Both Olsen and Murphy have finished first in road races in four different decades - the 1960's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

The peripatetic Olsen, now competing in the 50-59 age division, came very close to adding another first-place finish to a list that numbers close to 400 dating back to 1965. When asked why he decided to run the race for a first time, Olsen replied, "It's an evening race and I wanted to use it as a workout for Newburyport." "Newburyport" is the Yankee Homecoming 10-miler which serves as the USATF-NE 10M Championship and is scheduled to be run nine days after the Warren race.

After running his first road race at age 13, Murphy quit competing four years ago at age 43. He now "jogs" 30 minutes a day and confines his racing to a once a year effort at the Warren race. Despite this, he still managed to place 19th overall. During the 1980's, Murphy won the race five times, including posting a winning time of 26:09 in 1983. That time was the second fastest in the race's long history.
