14th Annual Mill Cities Relay

Clubs Celebrate 14th Running

Lawrence, MA - The Mill Cities Relay begins in Nashua, NH, passes through Lowell,MA and finishes in Lawrence, MA. This 28.9 mile race is run almost entirely along the banks of the mighty Merrimack River. Although the event is competitive, with participating teams competing for top honors in the numerous age divisions, it's more of a end of year celebration for most.
This year, eighty-five teams from twelve clubs participated. The clubs included the Gate City Striders (Nashua, NH), Greater Lowell (MA) Road Runners, Andover (MA) Striders, Winners' Circle Running Club (Salisbury, MA), North Shore Striders (Beverly, MA), Gil's Athletic Team (Topsfield, MA), Whirlaway Racing Team (Methuen, MA), Somerville (MA) Road Runners, North Medford (MA) Club, Squanacook River Runners (Groton, MA), Merrimack Valley Striders (Lawrence, MA) and the Greater Derry (NH) Track Club.
Leading the way was the Greater Lowell Road Runners as they won six of the contested eight divisions and the coveted Mill Cities trophy. GLRR also retains the bragging rights as Merrimack Valley Champions 1997-98. GLRR was followed by the Winners' Circle Running Club and the North Shore Striders.
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of the Phil Quinn award. This award is given annually to a member of a Mill Cities club who has contributed to improving running in their community. This year's recipient was Skip Cleaver of the Gate City Striders. Cleaver has worked deligently to improve the sport of running for his club, Southern New Hampshire and the Merrimack Valley. Fellow GCS member Warren Church cited many of Cleaver's accomplishments including Fitness University and the Temple Mountain 10-Miler.
