Medford, MA - What a difference a year makes. At last year's Medford Mile and 5K, the story was the weather. The race was held during one of the worst rain/wind storms in recent memory. It was so bad that the Head of the Charles Regatta was cancelled. This year Mother Nature was much kinder to race director Tony Loftus and his crew from the Irish American Track Club.
The Medford Mile and 5K consists of four 1-mile competitions followed by a 5K race. Somerville's Jeff Peterno turn in a fast 4:29 time to lead all men. Bradford's Maureen Mahoney led all women with an outstanding 5:20.
The 5k race was led by Rich Marion (15:30) of Lancaster and Lucy Canaven (20:39) of Marshfield. Lou Ruggiero turned in the best double of the day. The Woburn resident won the masters mile in 5:00 and then follow it with a win in the 5K (16:49). Billerica's Diane Dexter led all female master with a time of 23:07. Mark Stern (19:02) of Somerville and Sandra Cosco (29:33) of Saugus won the seniors' division.
This is a fine event with great T-shirts, lots of refreshments, merchandize prizes and a large raffle. Consider joining the IATC for next years' event.
