Hop 'N Rock Triathlon

Hopkinton, Ma September 14, 1997
½ mi swim, 10k ride, 5 k run
Hopkinton, MA - For the road weary triathletes of New England, the FIRM Hop 'N Rock Triathlon offered the ability to extend the multi-sport season in an innovative way. Athletes swam ½ mile in Hopkinton Reservoir, then boarded mountain bikes for a two lap, 10k off road segment, and finished with a 5k trail/road run. Given the technical nature of the ride, with numerous fallen logs, boulders, and single track segments, it was clear the fearless would rule the day - or suffer a spectacular mishap.

Jerry Dezutter avoided all mishaps in capturing the men's overall title. Dezutter overtook swim leader Bob Weathersby early in the ride, building a comfortable margin he protected over the hilly run segment. Weathersby held off Marc Saucier for second.

Meg (the other) Ryan also displayed a winning combination of courage and skill in taking the women's title. Ryan's time of 1:13:52 placed her 9th overall. Finishing second to Ryan and just missing top ten overall was Kim Walsh, followed by Cathy Corning.

Sponsored by the Minuteman Road Club, the Hop 'N Rock Triathlon award ceremony resembled bargain days at a high quality bike shop. Between awards and raffle prizes, it seemed nearly every participant came away with goodies. The triathlon season is waning, but races like these plant fond memories to carry us through the coming winter.
