U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Duathlon

May 24, 1997 Cape Cod, MA

Fantastic weather for a duathlon, but not such great weather for vacationing New Englanders...

The fourth annual U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Duathlon sported slightly overcast skies and cool but comfortable temperatures for the 123 athletes and 6 teams competing in the 2 mile run, 12 mile bike, 2 mile run on Cape Cod May 24, 1997.

The flat course and mild winds made for ideal race conditions, unlike last year's chilling temperatures and gusty blasts. The only change in the race course from last year was an announcement by race director Bill Fiske informing the athletes that the second run would go in reverse order from the first. After some initial worried looks and discussions about where to start the final kick for the finish line, the duathletes lined up and the race began. Frequent FIRM race participants Rick and Dick Hoyt were out on the starting line as well.

The U.S. Coast Guard Duathlon attracts many newcomers to the sport, as well as the veterans. Overheard were some last-minute instructions on transitions for the first-timers... a great race for anyone to do as an introduction to the sport, as Fiske's races are always well-managed and safe.

Travis Keane continued his impressive start to the multisport season with a strong win on the men's side. Recent mother Kevyn Fusco put in a fantastic effort to lead the women's field. Fusco and husband Scott had traveled down to the Cape that morning with the luck of finding a babysitter so the two of them could race. Both Mom and Dad posted strong finishes, but could not stick around for their awards as they had to hurry home.

The U.S. Coast Guard Duathlon is one in a number of well-attended FIRM duathlons and triathlons throughout the New England area.
