George Buchanan Takes 7th Title in 8 Years
Meg Hickey Wins Her First Series
Saturday, September 13......Stamford's George Buchanan
today continued his domination of road racing in lower Fairfield County,
winning his seventh Norwalk Summer Series in the past eight years. Occasionally
a faster runner shows up to challenge and defeat Buchanan in a single race,
but he has fashioned the incredible record of 44 first-place finishes and
7 second-place finishes in the 52 races he has run in the Summer Series
(he has missed just two races).
On the women's side, Greenwich's Meg Hickey easily won her first
Summer Series title.
An average of 106 runners finished each of the six races in this year's
series.
In the Series scoring, Purdy Points are awarded for each race:
the points reflect the runner's pace per minute, weighted for the number
of miles in that race. Then, the runner's worst race of the six is dropped
from the total. Buchanan amassed 3,276 points, while Hickey's
winning total of 2,063 points placed her 14th over-all.
In 1989, at the age of 31, George Buchanan first entered the Norwalk
Summer Series. The series consists of six races, run from June to September,
and progressing in length from 3 miles to a 13.1 half-marathon. Buchanan
ran five of the six races in that 1989 series, finished 4th, 4th, 4th,
2nd and 4th, and ended up as the second-best runner in the entire series.
In the eight years since then, Buchanan (a Stamford resident) has:
. Run 52 of the 54 races
. Set and still holds the course record for Roton's 7-Miler
. Set and still holds the men's age 30-39 course record for Calf Pasture's
9-miler
. Won seven of the eight Summer Series in this stretch
