Big City Time in Belfast, Maine
Reebok Enclave runner, Marty Shue's, course record fell today at
the 4th Annual Pancake 5K in Belfast, Maine today. Former U Maine runner
and current Belfast High School Cross Country coach (not to mention
mother of two and first grade teacher) Jo-Ann Nealy ran a life time PR of
17:15 in this USAT&F certified fund raiser for her high school runners.
Lowering the women's CR by 33 seconds from Shue's 17:48, Nealy
demonstrated that she is clearly recovered ( and then some!) from foot
surgery last year. Training and racing almost pain free for the first
time in years, Nealy has racked up impressive certified 1996 times ranging
from today's 5K to 60:13 for ten miles at the Hancock Lobster Festival and
1:22:27 for the largely unpaved and quite hilly, Bar Harbor Half Marathon
in Acadia National Park on September 21st. Only Joan Benoit Samualson has
run a faster women's time there!
With Shue's CR (PR 16:07) in the basket, watch for a very serious assualt
by a New England unknown on the Ocean State Marathon's women's course
record on November 10th.
Named after the post race feed, and definitly not after the terrain, the
Pancake 5K is a fund raiser for race Director and boys XC coach Dale Nealy
and Jo-Ann Nealy's Belfast High School Cross Country team.
In the men's race, Sheldon Young took the overall honors in 15:36 with
James Newett 44 seconds back. Masters' races were captured by Judson
Esty-Kendall in 16:41 and Sarah Andrus in 20:41.
