78 Year Old Makes USATF Age Graded Guideline
(and is 4th in his age group!)
by Majorie Tennyson
Brunswick, ME - Byrne Decker won the Maine Marathon on October 6th by one second. Today, Scott Brown of Lewiston ran 25:01 in
a blustery wind to relegate Byrne to second place in 25:05. There were a number of sprint finishes as
runners "packed" into small groups to head off the brunt of the wind. Unfortunately for Kevin Way, however,
Brown and Decker opened up a 40 second gap leaving Way to struggle home alone in the final stretch in 25:44
with the next runner, Michael Grigware a full minute behind in 26:47.
An additional reason for finishing sprints was the PT8K's status as the fourth in the five race Maine USATF
Grand Prix series. Points awarded by place in each race are getting tight and the cash awards may literally
come down to a sprint in some age groups. The final race is next weeks flat and fast Great Pumpkin 10k in
Saco, Maine.
In the women's race, only winner, Denise Harlow (29:03) finished in the top three unscathed as Christine
Snow Reaser, women's winner of the Casco Bay Half Marathon on October 6th, has been struggling with
"Kempainen-itis" in her recent races, arriving in second place at the finish in spite of the distress
decorating her T-shirt. Reaser did manage to hold off Rose Prest Morrison who took a serious tumble on the
course resulting in huge bumps on her hip and knee and requiring a trip to the ER after placing a close third
overall.. Once released, Rose RAN back to the awards ceremony from the hospital.
Thirteen runners finished under the USAT&F Age-Group Guidelines, most notably, Harpswell's 78 year old John
Woods who stated quietly, "Others my age run faster than I do, but I suspect few do it on as little training.
I was afraid to try to run the whole five but I held it at ten minute pace and ran the last mile in 9 minutes
so I must have had "something" left." For his effort, John was 4th of 5 in his age group!
Winning the 70+ Age Group was Russ Bradley of Cape Elizabeth with a stellar 39:09, followed by the youthful
78 year old Phillip Campbell ofLynnfield MA (43:59) and Nelson Soule of Freeport, Maine, in 45:47. Portland's
54 year old Gretchen Read (31:57) continues her fine performances, placing 6th overall and 5 1/2 minutes
ahead of her next age
group finisher!
