6TH THOMPSON ISLAND 8K
BOSTON HARBOR, MA SUNDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 1996
After last years washout, we had great weather for the 6th Thompson Island
8K. Bob O'Hara became the first masters runner to win the race, running
his fastest time in his six
finishes, 27:51. Bob led at the mile 1 field crossing, was challenged by
defending champ Jim Garcia and Boston U cross country ace Evan Slack, but
put the hammer down on the last beach crossing to win comforatably over
Garcia in 2nd and Slack in third. Lou Ristiano added a 4th to go along
with his 4 second place finishes.
Only 4 1/2 minutes after O'Hara, Sheila Purves became the first masters
woman to win the Thompson race. Sheila finished 13th overall in 32:13,
taking down the overall women's course record by 71 seconds. Purves was
nearly 16 minutes ahead of the second place masters woman Cheryl Gouviea!
Like Garcia, 1995 winner Antje Seims could only manage second place this
year, finishing in 33:28. Robert Sagan set a mens 70+ course record of
47:45. There were 188 finishers, all of whom enjoyed a cookout under the
sunny skies before setting off on the cruise back to Boston. As is their
custom, the Back Bay Road Runners all pitched in to conduct a first class
event, now a fixture on the summer running schedule.
