14th Annual SCT Marathon

If you ran this year's SCT Marathon, you did not have to take out a second mortgage to do so as is the case with so many marathons. For the 14th consecutive year, there was no entry fee and all participants received a designer tank top.

The timing was done by Kevin McGovern of West Boylston. That was because he was the first to finish. The SCT Marathon comes with one house rule - the winner does the timing. In addition to Kevin, the race utilized only two volunteers - Nancy Orni and Jane Townsend, the wives of two of the competitors - who provided mobile water stations on the course which begins and ends in Worcester and meanders through the hills of Holden, Rutland and Paxton.

Among the 20 starters was Paul McDermott. Running a marathon is tough stuff anytime. It is all the more difficult if you have passed the 60 years of age mark. And it is even more difficult if you take a wrong turn and run a distance in excess of 26.2 miles. None of these factors prevented McDermott from completing the run.
