Ro-Jack's 5 Miler - What a Race!
by Don Allison
I don't know who balances the budget at the Ro-Jack's 5 miler in Attleboro,
MA, but I sure wish they would let me in on their secret. As best I can
figure, they handed over a check for $25,000 to Sturdy Memorial Hospital
(towards a new maternity wing), handed out $20,000 in prize money to the
top finishers, and distributed approximately 150 raffle prizes, including a
barbecue grill, a bicycle, a CD unit, and several toboggans. Whew.
Oh yes, there was a race too. Or should I say races. In addition to the 5
mile featured event, there was a 2 miler, a 55 yarder for kids, and a 10
yard diaper derby for the younger attendees.
The course for the fiver was fast and flat. Kenyan Joseph Kamau took the CR
down to 22:18, 4:27 per mile. Two time Olympian Cathy O'Brien led the women,
with IronMan triathlon champ Karen Smyers finishing 5th in a tune-up run for
another go 'round in Hawaii later in the month. My own outlook was buoyed
by my fastest 5 miler in the past three years, 29:14. Regardless of the
results, good times were had by all. Great job, Rose & Jack!
