Marlboro Boys & Girls Club Triathlon

Marlboro, Ma. 6/2/96

.25 mi. swim, 11 mi. bike, 3 mi. run

Results and report: Bob Weathersby

The FIRM Marlboro Boys & Girls Club Sprint Triathlon has become a rite
of passage for many New England athletes. The '96 edition, held under
clear skies and light winds, allowed the approx. 170 athletes to
assess their fitness relative to the field, their aspirations, and the
     rolling landscape.

Shaking off morning stiffness from the previous day's yard landscape
work, Team USA and Boston University PHD candidates Paul and Carol
Barford captured the overall titles in a similar manner: maintain
contact on the swim, power to a substantial lead on the bike, then
maintain a steady effort on the run. Travis Keane and Cathi Remington
     garnered hard-earned runner-up status.

Reflecting a national trend, Men's Masters winner Bruce Butterworth
finished comfortably within the top 10 overall, but not before
checking over his shoulder on Masters runner-up Bob Lamothe. Longtime
stalwart Nancy Deroma captured the Women's title and fifth overall.

Representatives of the benefit organization, celebrating its 50th
anniversary, congratulated award winners. Continuing a FIRM tradition,
a large number of raffle and age group bonus selections accompanied
     the traditional recognition.

Laugh of the day belongs to the entrant(name withheld, but now in his
12th year of competition) who, after exiting the swim among the
leaders and zipping out of transition by pedaling atop his shoes,
discovered he'd clipped them in to the opposite foot's pedal! To
paraphrase another old warrior, "I coulda been a contenda!"
