Marlboro Lions Club Spring Sprint Triathlon
Marlboro, Ma. 5/19/96
450 yd swim/9.3 mi bike, 3.2 mi run
It's a New England reality that spring triathlons incorporate a pool
swim. The FIRM Marlboro Lions Club Spring Sprint Triathlon put athletes
through a 450 yd swim in groups of 10, resulting in draft-free cycling,
somewhat lonely running, and anxious faces clustered around finish line
results postings scanning time-adjusted standings.
20 year old Lynn Webb started in the 3rd swim wave, but powered her way
past all competition en route to the women's victory in 55:30. Webb, a
resident of Dorset, England and British naval crewman, joined six
shipmates in utilizing a shore leave from their Boston-docked aircraft
carrier to sample NE racing. Admitting to a 'rusty' swim through lack of
recent training, Webb expressed pragmatic determination towards her
seagoing training regimen: "we stoke the stationary bikes pretty hard,
and run the deck a lot when the weather's not too dear." Indeed!
Men's winner Kurt Korn also started in a secondary swim wave,
displaying amazing cycling and running prowess on the hilly course to
claim victory in 50:10. Swim ace Vincent Johnson followed ten seconds
later, with Chris Spaight a mere two seconds behind.
Bob Lamothe and Jeanne Tucker placed within the top five overall in
claiming Masters victories. Basking in emerging sunshine at the awards
cermony, they shared the sentiment of all 140 competitors in giving
thanks that spring seems FINALLY here!
