Moments before the start of this year's Hynes race, Lowell Police shutdown a section of the race course because of a spectacular car accident. Quick acting race officials detoured the course around the accident scene making the change relatively transparent to most finishers. The alternate course ended up being 4.8 miles instead of the usual 5 miles. Most runners seemed to welcome the shorten version of this longtime annual event. On a sad note, the accident that caused the detoured resulted in a fatality.
