New England showed its true colors on Sunday by serving up a cold, wet, and very windy day to 170 competitors in the second F.I.R.M. Grand Prix multisport event of the season. Local standouts Chris Levan and Fred Bartlett were joined by athletes from all over New England and New York, in fighting their way up gradual climbs made steeper by the winds.

At 8:00 the pack charged off up the coast, enjoying for the moment, a rather brisk tail wind. By the turnaround at 2.5 miles the lead group had become a single file led by Brian Noyes with the defending champion George Bent a close third. Entering transition first was Charlie Desourdy with Brian Noyes on his shoulder, followed closely by Bent and Vincent Kotowski.

In the women's race, Kathy Tetreault quickly ran to :30 lead over last years winner Amy Rice who was herself :30 up on Lori Brady-Maljan at the end of the run.

With the run behind them the athletes headed out onto the bike course into the gusting wind, that had even the best riders just trying to hold on to their bikes. Desourdy was out first, Bent made short work of his lead and after 3 miles caught him. The two of them swapped the lead several times until George used his strength to pull away along the back stretch of the bike loop.

George Bent won by a convincing 1:58 margin over Desourdy, with local Chris Levan in third.

A similar scenario was also played out in the women's field. Amy Rice caught Kathy Tetrealut on the bike and held on for a :45 victory over Lori Brady-Maljan in second and Kathy Tetreault in third.
