Nine States Produce National Champs
Lexington Herald-Leader
By Mark Maloney
A triplet from Arizona and a state runner-up from Minnesota were
among 10 national age-group champions crowned yesterday at the
Kentucky Horse Park campgrounds.
The triplet, Kimberly Bosen of Eagar, Ariz., won the Young Women's
division (age 17-18) of the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross
Country Championships.
The Young Men's title went to Andrew Johanson, runner-up in the
Minnesota State High School Class 1A race.
More than 3,000 runners competed, with the 10 races won by
individuals from nine states -- Arizona, Minnesota, California,
Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon and two from
Pennsylvania.
Rachel Sanford, who last month won her fourth straight Kentucky High
School Class 3A title for Pulaski Southwestern, placed ninth among
yesterday's Youth (13-14) girls.
Bosen, 17, is a senior at Round Valley High School and found a
crisp, sunny day in Kentucky not much different from her home.
"I live in the mountains," she said, "so it's pretty cold."
While Kimberly excels at running, sisters Madilyn and Tonya opt for
soccer and basketball, respectively.
Bosen, who plans to run in college for either Northern Arizona or
Brigham Young, is the Arizona 3A state champion. She took the lead
in yesterday's 5,000-meter race after about 11Ž4 miles and pulled
away to win in 18 minutes, 48.7 seconds, 18 seconds, ahead of Amber
Macy of Columbus, Ind.
Adrienne Lima of Paducah St. Mary placed 31st, helping Team Kentucky
to a second-place finish behind Raptor Racing of Michigan.
Johanson, 17, overcame a slip in mud near the 2-mile marker to win
the Young men's 5,000-meter event in 16:04.1. Jason Bialka of
Lockport, Ill., who won the 15-16 age group last year, was runner-up
in 16:07.8.
Chris Paisley of Washington Courthouse, Ohio, runner-up a year ago,
placed fifth. Kentucky Class 2A champion Paul Gilvin of Fleming
County was 11th, helping the Kentucky Bluegrass Harriers to a
fifth-place team finish.
Johanson was running with the lead pack after 11/2 miles, then tried
to pick up the pace at 2 miles, recovering quickly from his slip.
Bialka and third-place finisher Adam MacDowell of Manchester, Mo.,
hung close but could not match strides.
"I was fifth with a half-mile to go last year and won in the last
100," Bialka said. "I was ninth with a half-mile to go today. I
caught seven of them, but he had just too much of a kick at the
end."
Johanson, 6-foot-1 and 150 pounds, is a senior at United Southern
Central High, and is considering Minnesota and Wisconsin-Stevens
Point next year.
Sanford helped the Lake Cumberland Runners to a third-place finish
but was disappointed with her time of 15:22.6 for 4,000 meters. Her
personal best on the course, 14:40, was virtually matched by
yesterday's winner, Michelle Dela Vina of Valparaiso, Ind.
(14:40.1).
"I wanted to do better but I guess it's OK because there are a lot
of girls out there trying hard," said Sanford, 13, who attends
Southern Middle School. "There were a lot of people still behind
me."
