19th ANNUAL NORWALK (CT) SUMMER SERIES

Henry Goitia and Sherry Christoff
Lead 141 Runners in Norwalk Half-Marathon
Saturday, September 21......Henry Goitia, after finishing just behind George Buchanan in three
successive races of the Norwalk Summer Series, today ended the series with his first triumph, taking
the championship trophy in Norwalk's Pace-Setter Half-Marathon. Goitia, a Norwalk resident and
native of Venezuela, ran the 13.1 miles in a time of 1:17:39. Frank Udiskey of Bridgeport was
second in 1:18:20, and Eric Karl of Norwalk third, in 1:21:31. An unusual tie for fourth place
(1:21:39) was shared by a father and son: Alex Silverman (age 51) of Northampton, Mass. and his
son Gabriel Silverman (age 19) of Yale University, New Haven. Buchanan, using the race to test
his limits, went out in a blistering 5:04 pace and "hit the wall" just after the 8-mile mark; he finished
in 11th place, in 1:26:43.
The women's crown went to another new face in this series, Sherry Christoff of Middletown.
Christoff's time of 1:21:53 not only took the women's trophy but placed her 6th over-all and just 88
seconds behind the course record set by Kiki Sweigert back in 1981. Janel Willette (1:28:17) was
the second woman, and Mary Chute (1:28:40) was third.
Two course records were set. Susan Gold established a new women's record for the 40-49 year age
group, taking first place in that division in 1:30:24. In the men's 70-79 category, Cole Fisher
smashed the previous record by over 15 minutes, with a run of 1:59:42 that brought him in under the
two-hour mark.
A total of 141 runners ran both loops of this race, on a sunny, moderately warm morning (low 70's),
from Norwalk's Fox Run School. At least 20 more runners ran just the first loop. This concluded
the 19th annual Norwalk Summer Series; the winners of the series, over-all and by age division, are
reported on in a separate article.
